Lesson Starter Activities to Inspire Creativity

Ice Breaker

Pipe Cleaners

Materials: Pipe Cleaners

Process: Have each student take a pipe cleaner and use it to form into something that represents who they are.  It should be something that they are good at, that they like to do, something about their family, or something along those lines.  It can be an actual representation or a symbolic one.  When they are done, have them walk around and pair up with someone and try to guess each other’s’ shape.  Then pull the group together and have people share.

The Story Of Fabric

A great way to start a Year 9 textile lesson is by engaging students with an activity that stimulates creativity and curiosity. Here’s a lesson starter idea:

Lesson Starter: "The Story of a Fabric"

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Begin by showing the students a piece of fabric—preferably something unique or visually striking, like a patterned or textured textile.
    • Ask students to take a moment to observe the fabric closely.
  2. Prompting Questions (5 minutes):
    • Pose the following questions to the class:
      • "Where do you think this fabric came from?"
      • "What materials were used to create it?"
      • "Who might have been involved in making this fabric, and where in the world might they live?"
    • Encourage students to think about the entire journey of the fabric—from raw materials to the finished product.
  3. Group Activity (10 minutes):
    • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a different type of fabric (cotton, polyester, silk, etc.).
    • Ask each group to create a short story or narrative about the journey of their fabric, considering its origin, production, and potential uses.
    • Students can be creative, imagining not just the technical processes but also the lives of people who might be involved in each step.
  4. Discussion (10 minutes):
    • Have each group present their fabric’s story to the class.
    • Discuss the similarities and differences in the journeys of each fabric.
    • Highlight key points about sustainability, labor practices, and global impact in textile production.

After the discussion, connect the activity to the core lesson on sustainable practices in the textile industry, the importance of understanding fabric origins, and the impact of our choices as consumers.

This activity sets the stage for deeper exploration of the Sustainable Development Goals related to textiles and human-centered design, aligning with your ongoing focus in the classroom.

What Do You See Lesson Starter - Activity

The prompt "What do you see?" written at the top in a clear, inviting font, encouraging students to share their interpretations. The idea is to spark curiosity and discussion, allowing students to explore different perspectives and meanings.

Students to first individually write down ideas of what they can see and create a story from those ideas.  They then turn to their elbow buddy and share their stories with each other.
